From the Neolithic period, jade has occupied a unique position in Chinese culture. First used for ritual objects, nephrite jade has been employed continuously to make objects for worship, ornament and display. By the Bronze Age in China, during the Shang dynasty (c.1600 - c. 1027 BC), sophisticated technological advances resulted in the production of magnificent bronze vessels for ritual use and bronze weapons for ceremonial and practical purposes.
