Bamboo masterworks by Fujitsuka Shosei

Eskenazi is proud to present the first UK exhibition devoted to Fujitsuka Shosei (b. 1949). Celebrated for his bamboo creations, Fujitsuka was named a 'Living National Treasure' in bamboo craft by the Japanese government in 2023, an honour only bestowed on those with outstanding skills in their field. He is notable for his invention of sai-henka (colour transformation technique), where strips of bamboo are bevelled, dyed and arranged to form objects that give the optical illusion of changing shades of colours. Showcasing nearly fifty years of pioneering work, the exhibition features ten baskets and sculptures that highlight the exceptional craftsmanship with which Fujitsuka transforms bamboo into a refined art form.
