Bamboo masterworks from Japan – classical to contemporary

This second exhibition at Eskenazi Limited dedicated to Japanese bamboo works highlights thirty-one remarkable creations by eighteen different artists, from revered past masters in the field to contemporary practitioners. ‘Classical’ highlights include work by three generations of the renowned Chikuunsai lineage, as well as hanging flower baskets made by two designated ‘Living National Treasures’ in bamboo craft: Iizuka Shōkansai (1919 - 2004) and Katsushiro Sōhō (b. 1934). These are shown alongside abstract sculptural creations by contemporary artists such as Sugiura Noriyoshi (b. 1964), Honma Hideaki (b. 1959) and Shōno Tokuzō (b. 1942) who present a unique and fresh vision using centuries-old traditional skills and techniques.
