16. Huanghuali Cylindrical Box and Cover
Qing dynasty, 17th - 18th century
Diameter: 10.1cm
Height: 9.0cm
The beauty of this box lies in its simplicity of form – a pleasing cylindrical shape - without any embellishment or even beaded or moulded edges. The craftsman has allowed the strikingly grained huanghuali to take centre stage. The sides feature dramatic striations, ‘ghost faces’ and curving patterns resembling mountains while the concentric, radiating rings of the wood are centred on the cover.
