22. Carved Coconut Bowl
Qing dynasty, Qianlong period 1736 - 1795
Diameter: 8.4cm
Coconut shell was prized by antiquarians in China from the Ming dynasty (1368 - 1644). The material was sourced from at least two southern provinces, Guangdong and Guangxi, as well as from Annam (modern day Vietnam) and it was used to make smaller objects such as wine cups, wine pots, individual plates, wine ewers and water ladles.
