    The handle of this painting or calligraphy brush is inscribed with its size and the name of a famous ink maker, Hu Kaiwen, also known as Hu Tianzhu, who was one of the famous four Huizhou ‘Ink Masters’ of the Qing dynasty (1644 - 1911). His business grew to be one of the largest and most celebrated ink-stick making businesses during that period, and also produced brushes. The Hu Kaiwen ink-stick factory remains open and in production today.
