Northern Song period, 11th - 12th century The interior of this bowl is decorated with russet splashes, created by the application of iron-rich glazes or pigments on top of a black glaze. These are often referred to as ‘partridge feather mottles’ (zhegu ban), a term which originated in tenth century Chinese texts.
