Green-grey-glazed stoneware dish
Southern Song period, 12th - 13th century
Guan ware was produced from the middle of the twelfth century in Hangzhou, specifically for the Southern Song court, which had fled south after the Jurchen Jin invasion in 1127. The present dish is a rare example of Xiuneisi (Palace Maintenance Office) Guan ware. Its fine stoneware body is covered with a green-grey glaze which has been applied in several thin coats, giving its surface an opaque jade-like quality.
