Bronze Dragon
Six Dynasties period, 6th century
This striding bronze dragon is superbly modelled to show its muscular strength and sinuous elegance. More than any other creature, the dragon is linked with China and this auspicious animal is found on early Chinese ritual bronze vessels. The dragon was associated with rain-bringing and certainly from the Han period, it was closely identified with the emperor, as well as being one of the animals of the cardinal directions.
