Northern Qi period, 550 - 577 A remarkable feature of this Buddha is that his robes would once have been completely painted with Buddhist scenes - the extensive remains of pigments and gold leaf are still visible on the front and back of the figure. Such scenes usually show the six ‘Realms of Rebirth’, featuring deities, people, animals and demons, often within a rectangular grid.
