Penjing is translated literally as ‘landscapes in trays” or bonsai in Japanese. For the painter Zeng Xiaojun, “the gnarled branches conceal an internal struggle which is part of the great pattern life” and painting them becomes a way to “discover the traces left by the movement of the sun and the gradual erosion of wind and rain”.
