  • A rare and important blue and white porcelain ‘Guiguzi xia shan’ guan jar

A rare and important blue and white porcelain ‘Guiguzi xia shan’ guan jar

    Yuan dynasty, 1271 - 1368
    Height: 27.5cm

This unique jar is a masterpiece of Yuan dynasty blue and white porcelain and is one of a very small group of jars (guan) decorated with powerfully painted, wrap-around narrative scenes. The scenes on the present jar illustrate a historical tale of military strategy, featuring the sage/philosopher Guiguzi or Sage of Ghost Valley.

The jar had been in a European collection from the early 20th century and was acquired at auction in 2005 by Eskenazi on behalf of their collector for a then world-record price for any Asian work of art. It has since been loaned to two landmark Yuan exhibitions:  The World of Khubilai Khan, Chinese Art in the Yuan Dynasty at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (2010) and Splendors in Smalt: Art of Yuan Blue-and-white Porcelain held at the Shanghai Museum (2012-13).
