Lacquer and bamboo masterworks by Ikeda Iwao

Eskenazi Limited is delighted to present the first UK solo exhibition dedicated to Ikeda Iwao (b. 1940). Originally trained in traditional bamboo basket making and urushi lacquer art, Ikeda has taken both fields to new, innovative heights with his works, notable for their innovative approach and conceptual depth. This exhibition showcases sixteen outstanding works - including seven created especially for this occasion - that explore the dynamic interplay between the organic material of bamboo and the nuanced colours of urushi lacquer, what the artist calls 'the life of bamboo, the spirit of urushi'.
