  • Principal wares of the Song period from a private collection

This exhibition highlights a group of thirty important Song ceramics from a distinguished private collection. The Song period (960 - 1279) was an especially innovative and rich time for ceramic production and is often regarded as the ‘golden age’ of stoneware in China. This collection features outstanding examples from nearly all the main kilns from both north and south, including Guan, Ding, Jun, Yaozhou, Cizhou and Jizhou. Notable are the range of techniques used, the variety of shapes and indeed the extraordinary quality of the pieces, many previously owned by well-known collectors of the twentieth century, such as Lord Cunliffe, Mr and Mrs Alfred Clark and Alfred Schoenlicht.
