15. Black lacquer ‘mallow-shaped’ dish
Late Song - early Yuan dynasty, 13th century
Diameter: 17.6cm
Dishes in the form of an open mallow flower, undecorated except for overlapping ‘petals’ formed by S-shaped ridges on the interior and exterior, are classic examples of Song to Yuan dynasty lacquer. An example in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York is very close in shape and size and in having the same mark on the base (Lushi minben) – probably that of a maker or owner.
